Joy Jennings is an impressionist painter whose work has been influenced by her travels and study in France. Much of her subject matter for her work comes from her memories and photos of France. Closer to home, she loves to paint scenes of New Orleans which reflect the French roots of the city and its culture.
Her art reflects the influence of her many years of the study of dance. Very much a colorist, she creates her paintings as if she is choreographing a work on canvas, always conscious of form and movement of color. She hopes the viewer can become not only a spectator of the painting but a participant in the dance of the painting. Her process is contemplative and she leads workshops in this contemplative process; however, she is aware of the need for a painting to tell a story and become relevant to the viewer.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and French and a Master of Arts degree in French. She is a retired French teacher and still enjoys participating in the classes and activities at the Alliance Française in New Orleans and also going back to France whenever she can.
She is a member of several national art associations and has received numerous awards in various regional shows. For many years, she worked with the national organization, Episcopal Church and Visual Arts, where she served as the Exhibition Director and the national President.
